This lovely Fukien Tea Tree bonsai (Carmona microphylla) has been lovingly grown here on our nursery in Mid Devon, and it really shows. With its twisty, characterful trunk and neat, compact shape, it’s a tree that feels both elegant and full of life. We’ve carefully pruned and shaped it over time to give it this balanced, flowing structure — and now it’s looking absolutely fantastic.
The emerald-green leaves are glossy and tidy, and in summer, the tree bursts into delicate little white flowers that pop beautifully against the dark foliage. They’re dainty but eye-catching, and they always feel like a bit of a treat when they arrive. The creamy bark and naturally tiny leaves give this species loads of texture and interest, even when it’s not in flower.
It’s now potted in a sleek sparkly bronze ceramic pot with a matching drip tray — Holly chose this one, and I think she’s nailed it. The subtle sheen really picks up the rich green tones in the foliage and gives the whole thing a bit of a lift. It’s a gorgeous tree that would look stunning on a windowsill, sideboard or office desk.
Why We Love the Fukien Tea Tree Bonsai
We’ve always enjoyed growing Fukien Tea Trees — they’re brilliant indoor bonsai trees. They like a warm, bright spot (away from cold draughts), and if you keep them happy, they reward you with flowers most summers.
Originally from Southeast Asia, this species is full of charm. The name comes from China’s Fujian province, where it grows in the wild — usually on rocky hillsides in tough conditions. That might be why this tree has come to symbolise courage, love, and devotion — all things that make it a lovely, meaningful gift.
