Caring for Your Indoor Elm Bonsai Tree – Ideal for Beginners

Lighting: Place your bonsai where it will receive plenty of indirect sunlight. Shield it from direct sunlight, heat sources and drafts. This hardy species thrives both indoors and outdoors in warmer climates, easily adjusting to various environmental conditions. Please note, when kept indoors this bonsai is evergreen but it will become deciduous if kept outdoors.

Watering: Ensure the soil is kept just damp at all times. In warmer weather, the tree may require more frequent watering. As an evergreen, the Chinese Elm keeps its leaves throughout the year, necessitating regular watering to keep it healthy.

Temperature and Humidity: The Chinese Elm is quite adaptable, tolerating a range of temperature changes. To maintain ideal humidity, particularly in the dry conditions of winter heating, mist the leaves regularly.

Feeding: Boost growth and vitality by fertilising your Chinese Elm weekly with a balanced, diluted liquid Bonsai Direct bonsai fertiliser. Also, consider using a Plant Invigorator, which provides foliar nutrients and helps protect against pests and diseases, found to be highly effective in our nursery. It is also suitable for use with other plants.

Pruning and Shaping: Pruning is crucial to maintain the correct shape and encourage dense foliage. Regularly trim new growth to control the tree’s size and preserve its design. Pruning encourages ‘back-budding’, promoting new growth near the trunk for a compact and full appearance. Spring is the main season for pruning, as growth is slower during the rest of the year.
