An Introduction to re-potting Bonsai Trees
Why do we re-pot bonsai trees?
Bonsai trees maybe re-potted for several reasons. It could be that you just prefer an aesthetic change; a change in its visual appearance. Alternatively, the pot overtime has been damaged, and you want to refresh and make your bonsai look smarter. Usually, the reason for repotting a bonsai tree is that it is outgrown its current pot or has become pot bound. Whatever the reason, a new pot gives your bonsai a fresh aesthetic appearance. It also allows the bonsai to grow more vigorously if using a slightly larger size.
How do I know if the bonsai is ‘pot bound’ and needs re-potting?
Interestingly, all house plants or pot plants will become ‘pot bound’ overtime, and bonsai trees are no exception. The phrase ‘pot bound’ simply means that the soil contained within the pot is literally full of roots. When this happens, the roots can no longer grow and consequently the plant, in this case the bonsai tree, will also no longer grow and will possibly start to deteriorate. The roots of the bonsai are important, and it is vital that we give them enough room to grow and develop so that your bonsai can thrive and flourish.
To ascertain if the bonsai is pot bound you will need to slip the tree out of its pot. Sometimes the securing wire at the base of the pot will need to be removed first. If the soil looks compacted and solid with roots, then there is a good chance that the bonsai may benefit from a root prune or a larger pot.
This is not always an exact science. Some species are finer rooted, such as the Carmona Fukien Tea tree, and does not benefit from frequent repotting. Other species such as the Chinese Elm are fast growing, and regular repotting (e.g. every other year) rewards the grower with faster growth. In general, the older larger bonsai should be re-potted every 3-5 years. A young starter bonsai may need re-potting annually if fast growing.
When should I repot a bonsai tree?
Generally, indoor bonsai should be re-potted during the warmer months of May through to September. Outdoor deciduous bonsai are best re-potted in March but before the buds start to swell. Consequently, the weather in the spring may affect this. It is best to wait until the harshest of the winter weather is over, but re-pot before the buds start to swell and developing leaves emerge. Hardy outdoor evergreens such as pines and junipers should be re-potted around March (Springtime). It is worth mentioning that you can repot young junipers (under 20 years of age) any time except mid-winter.
