Something Else

The 4 most important things for a bonsai:
- Water – watering is the most important part of caring for a bonsai. Please check the soil daily and ensure it is always just damp at all times.
- Light – no plant is able to grow without natural daylight. Please ensure that your bonsai gets plenty of sunlight throughout the day, but avoid direct sunlight.
- Food – bonsai are reliant on us for everything, we need to make sure they get all the nutrients they need. Please feed once a week with a bonsai fertiliser.
- Temperature – indoor bonsai in particular like to be kept at roughly room temperature. If they get cold, they can often drop their leaves and struggle to grow. If they get too hot, they can dry out.
Bonsai Dos and Don’ts
| Do’s | Don’ts |
|---|---|
| Check your bonsai daily for water. | Don’t let your bonsai dry out or get too wet. |
| Use your finger to check the dampness of the soil. | Don’t use a moisture meter – they are unreliable. |
| Water when the soil is just damp to the touch. | Don’t leave your bonsai standing in a container of water for a prolonged period of time. |
| Keep your bonsai well-pruned, as this encourages new buds to form. | Don’t cover the soil surface with pebbles or gravel, as this makes it hard to tell when the bonsai needs watering. |
| Position your bonsai somewhere in a bright location, avoiding hot object such as radiators. | Don’t leave your bonsai on a hot windowsill during summer. |
| Repot your bonsai every 1 – 5 years. | Don’t repot your bonsai if it is struggling. |
| Feed indoor bonsai weekly year round, and weekly during the summer for outdoor bonsai. | Don’t feed your bonsai if it is struggling. |
| Spray your bonsai regularly with a tested insecticide, and spray under the leaves as well as on top. | Don’t spray your bonsai with vinegar – we have noticed a lot of blogs and pages recommending this, but it will kill the leaves. |
| Check out our care pages, which include loads of great information and helpful videos. Follow us on YouTube for more tips and tricks, and to learn more about the world of bonsai. | Don’t believe everything you read online – there is a lot of misinformation about caring for bonsai online, and a lot of this can actually cause your bonsai to suffer. Instead, learn about the world of bonsai from specialist bonsai growers. |
If the tabs above don’t answer your question, we are here to help.
We regret that we are unable to refund or exchange any bonsai after 7 days of delivery. This is because they are live plants and we find that after this time they have been out of our care for too long.
However, we are always here to help; if you have any questions about your bonsai, please send us some photos. Thank you for your understanding.
